It is easier and safer than you initially think to travel to Ouanaminthe, Haiti to participate in a mission project at Institution Univers school or the new medical clinic (Univers Medical Centre). Ouanaminthe is a city of about 100,000 people that is located in the rural northeastern region of Haiti, right on the border with Dominican Republic. Ouanaminthe is on one side of a river separating the two countries, and Dajabon, D.R. is right across the river. There is a very busy “border station” at the bridge crossing this river, with both countries staffing their immigration and registration offices for 8 daylight hours every day. Ouanaminthe benefits from this location because it has easy access to the extensive commercial enterprises across the border in Dajabon and also a couple hours away (on the good highways) in Santiago. People from the United States and Canada fly into either Santiago in north central Dominican Republic or into Puerto Plata, a resort city on the north eastern coast of the D.R. Both of these airports handle large jets that fly directly from U.S. cities such as Miami, Detroit, and Cincinnati. Visiting missions teams that are working at Institution Univers or the Univers Medical Centre can stay in the mission house that is on the premises of Institution Univers. There are separate dorms for men and women. It also has several private bedrooms with double beds. The mission house can accommodate up to about 45 people. There are indoor bathrooms with showers. Meals for small groups are served on the porch of the mission house. Electricity is provided by the school’s generator. Mission teams serving at the school or clinic are usually charged about $300 per person per week, which includes lodging, meals and ground transportation.
