Three Years And Counting
By Dave Mann
Pam and I have now been in Ouanaminthe full-time for three years. Our job is fluid, as one would expect, but our main responsibilities are as follows:
Pam:
Writing Bible curriculum for the primary level, grades 1-6
Teaching English to grades 3-6
Teaching art to grades 3-6
Teaching English to one 11th grade class, as well as to the top four 12th graders
Dave:
Teaching Bible to grades 10, 11, and 12
Teaching English to one 9th grade class, one 11th grade class, and the 12th grade class
Managing the finances of the school, along with Mèt Jaccin
Coordinating the English program with the other English teachers, Pam, Evens, Jocelyn
Language learning continues to be at the top of our list as the principle skill that makes ministry in Haiti productive and fun. Since Pam works mainly in the primary level, she teaches in Creole, I in the secondary level teach in French. But all teacher and administrator meetings take place in Creole. Being able to communicate with others concerning joys and frustrations makes relationships very rich. Often our evenings together include the sharing of stories of successes and miscues in the process of language learningnew words and idioms learned. When we think we’ve communicated one thing, but later learn that we’ve communicated something quite differentit’s times like these that keep us humble and provide ample opportunity for continued learning.
Univers continues to need additional personnel from outside of Haiti who have specific skills. Skills needed include: librarian, maintenance (in particular, diesel mechanics), a missions team coordinator, and a facilities manager. Interested?
