How You Can Help Support C.O.C.I.N.A.’s Mission

Financial Support
Currently, COCINA needs to send more than $500,000 per year to Institution Univers to help fund the costs of the school that are not paid for by the students’ tuition and other fees. Student tuition and fees pay only one-fourth of the total costs for school operations, capital improvements and maintenance.

Also, COCINA needs to send more than $120,000 per year to support the full-time operation of Univers Medical Center (i.e. primary care clinic), since it started in July 2008 operating 40 hours per week with a 24-person Haitian staff of professionals and support personnel. Patients visiting the clinic are charged a small “visitation fee,” and they pay for lab tests and medicines that are provided by the clinic. But, these patient fees cover only about 25% of the total costs for staffing, operating and maintaining the clinic.

Here are a variety of items related to the school and clinic that our contributions could support:

Institution Univers (school)

• $18 would buy diesel fuel and maintain generator for one hour of operation
• $60 would provide a daily lunch for an entire year (Students pay only $13 per year)
• $10-$20 would buy a textbook
• $85 pays annual tuition for one kindergarten or primary student
• $125 pays annual tuition for one middle school student
• $150 pays annual tuition for one high school student
• $205 would pay the annual direct operating costs of the educational programs (includes staff compensation except cooks, textbooks, supplies)
• $1800 pays an average annual salary plus benefits for an I.U. staff member
• $120 provides internet connection for one month for school and clinic
• $200 buys a school supply kit for 100 students (6 notebooks, pencil, pen, eraser, ruler)
• $2115 pays all Kindergarten teachers’ salaries for one month
• $2355 pays all Primary teachers’ salaries for one month

Univers Medical Center

• $120 pays for 10 hours operation of clinic generator
• $1,130 provides one doctor’s monthly salary
• $775 staffs the clinic pharmacy for one month (pharmacist and assistant)
• $1,275 provides salaries for the clinics several nurses
• $700 pays for the laboratory technicians’ monthly salaries
• $130 purchases medications prescribed and provided for about 10 patients

Consider giving a contribution in honor of someone as a birthday present, Christmas present or special friendship. And, consider giving to COCINA in memory of a loved one. CLICK HERE to download a donation card for giving “in honor of” or “in memory of” someone who is or has been special to you. For contributions “in honor of” someone special, COCINA will mail to you a card that you can mail to the person you are honoring.
